Volunteer Opportunities

Working for LR is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in small-press digital publishing. We are a very small, completely online operation consisting of two young, energetic editors and several contributing staff writers who see LR both as a way to give back to the community and as a space in which we can participate in greater aesthetic, cultural, and political conversations about contemporary Asian American poetry. Writing for the blog or working on the magazine is an excellent way to engage with contemporary poetry and Asian American literature. If you are someone who is passionate about Asian American writing and who hopes to become more deeply involved in the business of poetry, then this is the place for you.

POSITIONS AVAILABLE

Editorial Intern

Responsibilities

Our intern will be responsible for helping us to manage our blog and social media presence, for assisting us with correspondence, for helping us to prepare for the release of upcoming issues, and for working on other general administrative and development-related tasks. The intern will also be given occasional special project(s) to work on, depending on his or her interests and expertise.  This could involve any number of things, from helping to plan and organize an event, to designing publicity materials, to helping with the layout and coding process for an upcoming issue.

Logistics

This is a work-from-home, part-time position. Interns commit to a term of one school quarter or semester (extendable). Because you will be telecommuting, your schedule will be negotiable. If you live in or near a major city, you may occasionally be asked to attend and cover evening or weekend events for the blog. If you live in the Seattle, New York City, Philadelphia, or San Francisco Bay areas, you may also be asked to meet with the editors in person. Regardless of your geographical location, you will be expected to meet with us via Skype, conference call, or chat on a regular basis, and to communicate with us frequently via email. Because we are a volunteer-run publication that does not operate out of a physical office, we are regrettably unable to offer you desk space or paid compensation. However, if you are a student, we are more than happy to work with you to help you obtain school credit.

Desired Qualifications

  • US-based.  Must be able to meet all deadlines on Eastern Standard Time, even if living in another time zone.
  • Incoming college junior or senior, recent college graduate, or current graduate student. (Preferred majors: English, Creative Writing, Comparative Literature, Asian American Studies, or related).
  • Strong verbal communication skills (including a solid sense of grammar and mechanics).
  • A hard worker who is responsible, reliable, and flexible; is able to juggle multiple projects; and is able to comport him or herself  in a consistently professional manner.
  • A sharp critical eye, with some knowledge of poetic craft and a passion for Asian American literature.
  • Fluency in the use of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube.
  • Experience with blogs and/or blogging (familiarity with WordPress helpful, but not required)
  • Knowledge of MS Office, Gmail, and Google Doc’s.
  • Knowledge of, and access to, Adobe Photoshop or similar photo-editing software. (Knowledge of, and access to Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and InDesign are also helpful, but not required).
